What is Wernicke’s Encephalopathy?

Wernicke’s Encephalopathy is a serious brain condition caused primarily by a deficiency of vitamin B1 (thiamine). This deficiency most commonly arises from prolonged heavy alcohol use, which impairs the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients, particularly in the stomach, where vitamin B1 is absorbed. Symptoms can develop rapidly, sometimes within hours, and include confusion, uncoordinated movement and vision changes. These symptoms are often mistaken for intoxication, but immediate medical treatment with vitamin injections is critical.

If left untreated, Wernicke’s Encephalopathy can cause permanent brain damage and lead to Korsakoff’s syndrome, characterised by severe memory loss and cognitive difficulties. Early recognition and intervention are vital for improving outcomes and preventing long-term neurological decline.
